The Rail Expertise Center (RAIL) is a branch of the Cégep of Sept-Îles dedicated to the railway industry. Located in Sept-Îles, on Quebec's North Shore, it offers applied research, technical assistance and specialized training to optimize the safety, reliability and performance of infrastructure and rolling stock. The RAIL Centre is located in the Rio Tinto | IOC Research and Innovation Pavilion, a state-of-the-art building inaugurated in 2025.
The Centre's mission is to actively contribute to the evolution of rail transport by supporting companies through technological innovation, applied research, skills development and field experimentation. The Center aims to increase the performance, safety and sustainability of rail networks, particularly in Nordic and industrial environments.
Rolling stock: Creation of sensors to monitor equipment and detect its state of health. The products developed collect new information to improve equipment maintenance and availability.
Track maintenance: Creation of sensors to monitor equipment and detect its state of health. The products developed collect new information to improve maintenance and equipment availability.
Rail operations: Helping to manage rail operations. The products developed aim to standardize driving methods, reduce wasted time and increase productivity.
Safety: Creation of electronic systems to alert workers to imminent dangers. The products are designed to add extra layers of protection and minimize the risk of injury.
